Climate warming causes mast seeding to break down by reducing sensitivity to weather cues

چکیده
Climate change is altering patterns of seed production worldwide with consequences for population recruitment and migration potential. For the many species that regenerate through synchronized, quasiperiodic reproductive events termed masting, these changes include decreases in synchrony interannual variation production. This breakdown occurrence masting features harms reproduction by decreasing efficiency pollination increasing predation. Changes are often paralleled warming temperatures, but underlying proximate mechanisms unknown. We used a unique 39-year study 139 European beech (Fagus sylvatica) trees experienced to track developmental cycle pinpoint phases where weather effects on have changed over time. A cold followed warm summer led large coordinated flowering efforts among plants. However, failed respond signal as summers warmed frequency cues fivefold. Less synchronous resulted less efficient further decreased maturation. As global temperatures expected increase this century, perennial plants fine-tune their schedules based temperature may suffer regeneration failures.

However, the physiological mechanisms that mediate masting events and link them to weather and plant resources are still debated. Here, we explore how masting is affected by plant resource budgets, fruit maturation success, and hor...
متن کاملThe Sensitivity of Mountain Snowpack Accumulation to Climate Warming
Controls on the sensitivity of mountain snowpack accumulation to climate warming (lS) are investigated. This is accomplished using two idealized, physically based models of mountain snowfall to simulate snowpack accumulation for the Cascade Mountains under current and warmed climates. Both models are forced from sounding observations. The first model uses the linear theory (LT) model of orograp...

Another way to break down
hen yeast secretory proteins are improperly folded, the ER quality control system directs them into the HRD/DER pathway, which targets the proteins for degradation. Blocking the HRD/DER pathway, however, does not completely stop degradation, implying that there must be an alternative way to destroy misfolded secretory proteins. Haynes et al., reporting on page 91, have now characterized that pa...
متن کاملElevation-dependent responses of tree mast seeding to climate change over 45 years
We use seed count data from a New Zealand mono-specific mountain beech forest to test for decadal trends in seed production along an elevation gradient in relation to changes in climate. Seedfall was collected (1965 to 2009) from seed trays located on transect lines at fixed elevations along an elevation gradient (1020 to 1370 m). We counted the number of seeds in the catch of each tray, for ea...
